What is Christianity?

Christianity is the major religion that believes in the life, teachings, and death of Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior of mankind. It is the largest religion in the world and consists of different forms. Some of its major church groups are Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant churches.

More denominations are already present since the Reformation Era, where other Christians criticized the beliefs and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. The Catholic Church refused to adhere with their proposed reformations, creating the division of Christianity into more churches and denominations. Some of its denominations include Anglicanism, Baptist, Calvinism, Evangelical, Lutheranism, and Presbyterian churches.

What do the Christian Churches believe?

The Christian community mainly believes that Jesus Christ is fully human and fully divine and believing in Him, and his teachings can give people eternal life. They believe that God, the Father, sent Jesus Christ to free people from the slavery of sin and death. Jesus Christ lived with humans and suffered on their hands. He taught people to love God and neighbors with all their hearts and all their lives. He showed God’s message of love and forgiveness of God through His sufferings and death on the cross.

Christians believe in the sacred scriptures in the Holy Bible. It consists of the Old Testament, which contains scriptures of Jesus’ time and the New Testament, which includes the writings about Jesus Christ. The Holy Bible teaches about salvation as a gift of God to the people. It also contains the ten commandments of God that Christians follows and believes. The primary and most important of the commandments is loving God above all and loving other people as much loving oneself.

Common Christian practices

The Reformation Era and the religious wars in the 16th to 17th century divided the Christian Church into several groups. But although there are differences in the practices in various denominations of the Christian Church, there are still common elements. Standard Christian Practices include worship service once a week, prayer, study, and reading of the Holy Bible, and participation in the Holy Sacraments of baptism and communion.

Generally, Christian worship services include the singing of worship songs, prayer, and a sermon from a designated leader. Also, Christians are baptized to join the congregation and should participate in the Holy Communion, which represents the Lord’s Supper and the Holy Eucharist. Most Christian Churches follow these two sacraments. However, the Roman Catholic Church follows seven sacraments including confirmation, reconciliation, anointing of the sick, marriage, and holy order, in addition to baptism and the eucharist.
